Meet the director ꩜
Hiu Chan (RCC, MC)
Founder of Room of One's Own & Co-Founder of Liberate Counselling Collective.
Hiu (she/they) is a somatic attachment therapist and intersectional feminist narrative practitioner who has training in anti-racism, EMDR, and clinical hypnosis. Hiu's practice (including organizing VABA) is informed by her research in therapeutic alliance, anti-capitalism, the attachment system, and Intersectionality.
Since beginning her practice in 2018, Hiu has participated in diverse therapeutic collectives and dynamics. These experiences and learnings form the foundation of VABA Therapy Lab, which grows with the intention of cultivating positive therapeutic connections, and in response to practitioners' individual and relational needs within the group.
What is therapeutic alliance?
It's the quality of the connection between you and your therapist. A well-researched topic, it is a necessary factor for therapeutic efficacy. While chemistry is an elusive concept to define, shared lived experiences and values are major influences. We prioritize pairing our clients with therapists with whom they are more likely to have a positive relationship and therefore effective therapy.
As clients, we encourage you to be selective with whom you work with. In hopes of making the process easier, we invite you to share with us what you're looking for in a therapist in the form below and we look to do our best in making a match, whether from our Lab or our external network.
